Land of gourmets and gourmands.

Land of gourmets and gourmands.

Discovering a land, is meeting its inhabitants, their architectural heritage and wildlife
patrimony, their activities, their gastronomy.
Gaume offers a wealth of first class specialities.

Some recipes are ancient like the “touffaye”, the “cabu roussi” and the “roustiquette”.
The meat pie Gaumaise “Pâté Gaumais” is an EU quality-label and is one of Gaume’s gastronomic jewels.
Gaume’s young chefs have however managed to marry Gaume’s traditional products with
today’s tastes by proposing new recipes with fish from our pure rivers, guaranteed meat,
foie gras, tasty sausages…
In Gaume, as anywhere else, there is a wealth of cheeses.
Gaume’s delicatessen are more spicy and less dry than those of the Ardennes. Let’s admit
that they aren’t really given the time to grow old…

But Gaume is food and drink. Orval is the most famous Trappist beer. Local family
breweries offer the Gaumaise, the Spéciale, the Rulles, the Gaumette, the Virtonnoise,
etc… The Zigomar, a Gaumais apple wine flavoured with sweet woodruff (Asperula
odorata), is a perfect aperitif to be served chilled with a slice of orange.
Finally Torgny’s wines, red or white, give evidence of the microclimate of Belgium’s
southernmost tip. These very pleasant local wines can be served as an accompaniment to
Gaume’s specialities.

The leaflet “La Gaume Gourmande” (Gourmet Gaume), which lists Gaume’s producers and restaurant owners where “the tasty local products” can be savoured, is available free of charge at Virton’s Tourist Office.
